Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)

You may have seen recent news about a new medication, Tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro), being made available in primary care to support people living with obesity.

While this is a positive step forward, please be aware that this treatment is not yet available at GP surgeries, including here at Old Catton Medical Practice.

Locally, Great Yarmouth and Waveney ICB are working hard to get the service up and running, for now, we kindly ask that you don’t contact the Practice about Mounjaro, as we’re not currently in a position to offer assessments or prescriptions.

The treatment will only be available to those meeting strict eligibility criteria set nationally. This includes having a BMI of 40 or above (or 37.5 if you’re from a Black, Asian or other minority ethnic background), along with at least four of the following health conditions:

• Type 2 Diabetes

• High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

• Heart Disease

• Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

• Abnormal Cholesterol Levels (Dyslipidaemia)

It’s initially being prescribed by specialist hospital clinics, and we are not sure when it might be available for GP’s to prescribe but will of course let you know as soon as we do.

Patients may be eligible for weight management referrals via OVIVIA. If you would like to enquire please contact the practice via our website.
